A home for childhood

At Sunflower we are advocates for children. We give them opportunities to be heard, to learn–and to just be kids. Our programs set the stage for the development of social emotional intelligence, imagination, problem-solving skills, innovative thinking and the creativity needed to successfully lead future generations.

Childhood is Changing

Children face a different world than they did even five or ten years ago. Today’s child spends an average of seven hours screen time and only one hour playtime, mostly indoors, each day. At the same time, there has been a sharp increase in anxiety, depression and feelings of helplessness among children, adolescents and young adults.

But Children are the Same

The demands of busy schedules and ever-present technology may be new, but children still need play. Play is as vital to children’s development as food, water and sleep. Sunflower’s programs give children access to the cognitive, creative, emotional, social and physical benefits of free play, as well as essential opportunities for art and nature exploration.

Children will carry what they learn in Seedlings with them throughout their lives. I highly recommend spending lots of time outside, playing in the woods, catching frogs, getting dirty; it’s the greatest way to learn what the world is really about.

Over the past 60 years we have witnessed, in our culture, a continuous, gradual, but ultimately dramatic decline in children’s opportunities to play freely, without adult control, and especially in their opportunities to play in risky ways. Over the same 60 years we have also witnessed a continuous, gradual, but ultimately dramatic increase in all sorts of childhood mental disorders, especially emotional disorders.

I have a place where dreams are born,

And time is never planned.

It’s not on any chart,

You must find it with your heart.

Never Never Land.

It might be miles beyond the moon,

Or right there where you stand.

Just keep an open mind,

And then suddenly you’ll find

Never Never Land.

You’ll have a treasure if you stay there,

More precious far than gold.

For once you have found your way there,

You can never, never grow old.

And that’s my home where dreams are born,

And time is never planned.

Just think of lovely things.

And your heart will fly on wings,

Forever in Never Never Land.

You’ll have a treasure if you stay there,

More precious far than gold.

For once you have found your way there,

You can never, never grow old.

And that’s my home where dreams are born,

And time is never planned.

Just think of lovely things.

And your heart will fly on wings,

Forever in Never Never Land
